Biography
Indonesian-born artist Melati Malay issues her solo recordings as Melati ESP after earlier stints in the groups Young Magic and Asa Tone. Her first full-length effort, Hipernatural, appeared in 2023 on Carpark as a lush, dreamy collection of electronic pop songs shaped by ambient house, liquid jungle, and new age, with every vocal delivered in Indonesian.
Malay spent her Jakarta childhood immersed in Javanese gamelan alongside atmospheric drum'n'bass and ambient music. After relocating to New York she co-founded the dream pop band Young Magic in 2010 alongside Isaac Emmanuel and Michael Italia; the trio issued three albums on Carpark and shared stages with Purity Ring and Tricky. She next formed the post-minimalist percussion trio Asa Tone with producers Tristan Arp and Kaazi, which released its debut album Temporary Music on Leaving Records in 2020, followed by Live at New Forms in 2021. Continuing her partnership with Kaazi under the Melati ESP name, Malay revisited those formative sounds while adopting Indonesian lyrics for the first time, resulting in the 2023 arrival of Hipernatural on Carpark.
