Biography
Born in the USA to West Indian parents and raised as a New Yorker, rapper Mello K promoted his work with the calculated claim, “My rhymes are basically about females because they take to the music and they encourage guys to buy it.” He first surfaced as a committed recording artist in 1990, when sessions alongside Keith Sweat and Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band led him to assemble the crew 40 Deep and connect with producer Monti Blues as well as reggae DJ Shawnie Ranks. Ranks in turn secured Mello K’s introduction on L.A. Boy Records, where the artist also appeared on the single “Do Me,” a simmering narrative styled after lovers rock. That sensual vein established his reputation, yet the same debut album revealed an equal command of terse, street-edged rhymes.
