Following his exit from the indie underground outfit I Am Spoonbender in spring 2000, Brian Jackson sought a venture of greater substance and tangibility. He encountered singer and visual artist Phoenix Perry while both attended an exhibition dedicated to electronic pioneer Morton Subotnick at the Pond Gallery in San Francisco, and an exceptional duo took shape at once. Jackson and Perry fused their notions of "post-futurism" in February 2001, giving rise to the obscure techno/electro-wave act Memory Systems. The project's eight-song debut, Ad Placement for the Collective Unconscious, appeared as a self-release on its own imprint, Form Records, in 2002.
