Established toward the end of 2001 in Danville, NH, Mercury Switch earned a reputation for cycling through bassists at a rate comparable to Spinal Tap’s drummer turnover. The group focused on the standard melodic deathcore sound of the mid-2000s, enhanced by an unusually heavy presence of synthesizers along with sporadic structural nods to art and math rock. Indianola Records signed them promptly, and the 2005 lineup—vocalist Sam, guitarist Mark, vocalist and synth player Luke, bassist Eli, and drummer Jon—had already issued its debut full-length, the extensively titled If You Love Me, You'd Take Me to the City, in 2003 before delivering the follow-up Time to Shine two years afterward.
