Metaphor originated in California during 1993 when guitarist Malcolm Smith assembled the lineup expressly to perform Genesis material. Marc Spooner on keyboards, drummer Bob Koehler, bassist Vince Montia, and Malcolm’s brother Robert on vocals completed the initial roster. Before long the musicians turned their attention to original songs and abandoned the Genesis tribute format. The two Montia brothers departed by 1996, and the vacancies were filled the following year when Jim Post took over on bass and John Mabry became lead singer. In 2000 the band issued its debut album, Starfooted. Post exited later the same year, with Jim Anderson stepping in as his replacement.
