Biography
Metaphysical Jones, based in Detroit, flourished in the opening years of the 2000s by cultivating an improvisational strain of jam rock steeped in jazz influences. From 2000 through 2003 the quartet became a fixture on the city’s live circuit, stretching original material into epic lengths while regularly inserting cover songs. Guitarists and vocalists David Gullo and Steve Roginson guided the band, while bassist Brett Dodson and drummer Michael Medvinsky completed the lineup. Their high-energy concerts carried psychedelic overtones and regularly spotlighted harmonica, lap steel guitar, and buoyant vocal harmonies. The self-titled debut disc appeared in 2001, preserving the urgency of those stage performances. Kurtis “Catnip” Katzenmeyer compiled the album from assorted live recordings. The group dissolved in early 2003.
