Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Meth Teeth (careful when googling) traces an origin comparable to Bon Iver, with its driving force launching the project once an earlier band dissolved and personal songwriting took over. Mattey Hunter, the founding member, began questioning how satisfied he felt performing in groups, prompting him to compose acoustic folk material strictly for his own enjoyment and to deliver those pieces at house shows across Portland. The process brought him together with Kyle Raquipiso, an earlier recipient of Sub Pop’s Loser Scholarship; Hunter has credited Raquipiso with supplying the blown-out hiss on the recordings and with introducing electric instruments to their concerts. Matt Nice served briefly on guitar for live dates and a national tour.

Hunter and Raquipiso next wrote and tracked material as a duo, placing songs on the Sweet Rot label that included their debut 7" in 2007. Their first full-length, Everything Went Wrong, surfaced in fall 2009 on Woodsist and coincided with the addition of guitarist Zach Fischmann, whose second guitar part thickened Meth Teeth’s fuzzy, mumbled, trashcan-rawkus haze. Fischmann exited after the album’s release, after which Aaron Levy joined the lineup.
