Sheard's recordings feature soaring vocals paired with haunting melodies, which makes her early '90s stage appearances as a comedian in Toronto's Second City Master Class seem like an unlikely precursor to her singer/songwriter path. It did not take long for her to discover a stronger preference for delivering songs through performance rather than embodying them via acting. The album With Love and Squalor came next, its name derived from the J.D. Salinger story "For Esme, With Love and Squalor" in Nine Stories, and she drew creative fuel from the unexpected pairing of Salinger with Joni Mitchell. Extensive travel and touring over two years infused her subsequent effort, the 1999 album Reptilian, with varied experiences and emotional depth. In spring 2002 she reentered the studio for several months to develop fresh material that eventually became Anemone, issued later that year.
