After receiving his 1982 diagnosis, Michael Callen swiftly altered how the public viewed individuals living with AIDS. Through speeches, articles, national television appearances, interviews, community organizing, political campaigns, and performances delivered at a pace that would tire even the most robust performers, he reshaped perceptions single-handedly. Randy Shilts documented those advocacy campaigns in the landmark volume And the Band Played On. Callen’s recorded work proved equally remarkable, encompassing two albums with the Flirtations. Six years after his HIV diagnosis—and after he had founded the PWA Coalition and testified before Congress on AIDS—he issued his first solo album.
