Biography
Michael Carvin stands out as an exceptionally talented drummer whose extensive work has enriched the modern jazz landscape. In roles leading ensembles, performing alone, or collaborating within the rhythm section, he has showcased remarkable technical prowess alongside nuanced supportive abilities. Before his enlistment in Earl Grant's big band during the middle of the 1960s, his father, himself a drummer, provided instruction in fundamental techniques. Following military service in Vietnam, he performed alongside B.B. King. The 1970s brought engagements with Freddie Hubbard, Pharoah Sanders, Lonnie Liston Smith, McCoy Tyner, Jackie McLean, and Clive Stevens' Atmospheres, while the subsequent decade featured studio work alongside Mickey Bass and Charles Davis. Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, Carvin released his own projects on the Muse and Steeplechase labels.
