Biography
Michael Franti’s path began in the 1980s when, still in his early twenties, he joined the avant-garde collective the Beatnigs. From there he moved into the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, where he established himself as a politically charged, socially aware rapper. Once Spearhead formed, Franti fused that same drive for justice with his deep affection for classic R&B, soul, reggae, and hip-hop. During the 1990s the band built a fervent following for its energetic concerts and issued well-received records, among them the 2001 release Stay Human and All Rebel Rockers in 2008. The group stayed active through the following decade, launching the hopeful Work Hard & Be Nice at the start of 2020.
Spearhead’s first outing, the widely praised Home, arrived in 1990. Among its tracks were the single “Hole in the Bucket,” a reflective look at homelessness, and “Positive,” which confronted the expanding AIDS crisis. The record combined skillful funk loops, winding guitar lines, and warmly melodic pieces that explored family ties and societal wrongs. Chocolate Supa Highway followed in 1997; less radio-oriented than its predecessor, the album tackled kidnappings and police violence, pairing those subjects with tougher sonic elements such as techno, rock, and funk—an evolution that mirrored Franti’s expanding perspective. In 2001 he delivered Stay Human, a cycle of songs centered on an imagined death-penalty case that voiced his outrage at institutional power, his commitment to love, and his faith in personal liberty and creative expression, all rendered with graceful nods to the styles that shaped him.
Franti’s initial full-length solo effort, Songs from the Front Porch, surfaced in 2003 as an acoustic set that placed greater emphasis on his vocals without softening the sharp, reflective quality of his words. Love Kamikaze: The Lost Sex Singles & Collectors’ Remixes appeared in 2005 under his name alone, gathering Spearhead material that had been left off earlier projects along with alternate mixes from Stay Human. Yell Fire!, credited to Franti and Spearhead in 2006, was partly tracked in Kingston, Jamaica; together with the book and film I Know I’m Not Alone, it formed a triptych documenting his visits to Israel, Palestine, and Iraq. A string of live albums bridged the gap to 2008’s All Rebel Rockers, which was again cut in Jamaica with the storied rhythm section Sly & Robbie and yielded the Top 20 single “Say Hey (I Love You).” After several months on the road opening for John Mayer, the band reconvened to issue The Sound of Sunshine in 2010.
Following additional touring, humanitarian projects, and a period of rest, Franti resumed studio work, resulting in the summer 2013 release All People. Soul Rocker arrived in 2016, incorporating a stronger electronic presence aided by producers Stephen McGregor—son of reggae icon Freddie McGregor—and Dwayne Chin-Quee, known as Supa Dups, of the Black Chiney sound system. Stay Human, Vol. 2, issued in 2019, served simultaneously as the soundtrack to Franti’s self-directed documentary of the same name and as a follow-up to his 2001 album, extending its message of optimism amid upheaval into the 2020 record Work Hard & Be Nice.
