Biography
Michael Gregory ranks among Britain's premier folk-rock drummers and maintains close ties to the Albion Band, a flexible unit that could expand to twelve members and first took shape as a backing ensemble for stage productions at London's National Theatre. He has also collaborated on stage and in the studio with splinter projects led by Albion Band associates such as Ashley Hutchings, as well as with additional groups sharing the same stylistic leanings, among them the celebrated Fairport Convention and little-known 1970s outfits like Big John's Rock'n'Roll Circus. One notable thread in Gregory's artistic growth lies in the degree to which theater commitments redirected the Albion Band's overall sound. Audiences steeped in folk-rock might register surprise at the heightened volume and more forceful drive the group supplied for Dispatches, the 1980 drama focused on the Vietnam conflict. In 1983 the percussionist entered Home Service, a modestly scaled outfit that emerged from the Albion Band.
