Biography
Born on 19 August 1934 in Memel, Lithuania, Naura taught himself piano and flute before studying philosophy, sociology and graphic arts in Berlin. During the 1950s he joined forces with vibraphonist Wolfgang Schluter to form a band whose sound fused blues, bebop and European avant-garde currents; the ensemble quickly emerged as one of Germany’s foremost groups of the 1960s. In 1971 he assumed leadership of the Jazz Department at Norddeutscher Rundfunk, a post he continues to hold. He still performs sporadically with small ensembles and regularly partners with Peter Ruhmkorf for poetry-jazz recitals. He also serves as president of the German chapter of Performers and Artists for Nuclear Disarmament (PANDA).
