Biography
Monteclair had already mastered the bass violin along with the double bass by his twentieth year, when he took up the latter instrument in the Paris Opera orchestra. Esteemed as an instructor, he enjoyed success as a composer across numerous forms. A substantial body of his theatrical scores would later shape Rameau’s writing, and he produced several cantatas that incorporated operatic techniques. Airs, sacred pieces, and instrumental music further enriched his catalog. "Principes de musique" stands today as a key historical reference for French vocal embellishments of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
