Michelle Phillips first achieved widespread recognition through her role as a vocalist in the acclaimed 1960s folk-pop ensemble the Mamas & the Papas. The group achieved international success with chart-topping singles such as "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday," establishing Phillips as a prominent singer on the global stage. Once the band dissolved permanently in 1971, she chose not to follow the solo recording path taken by her former bandmates and instead turned her attention to acting.

Born Holly Michelle Gilliam on June 4, 1944, in Long Beach, California, Phillips encountered her future husband John Phillips in 1961. Together with Denny Doherty they formed the New Journeymen, and after four years the trio relocated to the Virgin Islands where Cass Elliott joined them. The resulting quartet became the Mamas & the Papas and quickly scored number-one hits including "Dedicated to the One I Love" and "Monday, Monday." Released in January 1966, the additional hit "California Dreamin'" emerged as the ensemble's signature song. Internal tensions, romantic entanglements, and substance issues prompted the group to disband in 1968; they reunited briefly in 1971 to record the album People Like Us before calling it quits for good that same year. From her marriage to John Phillips, Michelle gave birth to daughter Chynna Phillips, who later pursued her own singing and acting career as a member of Wilson Phillips.

Following the Mamas & the Papas' final split, Phillips devoted most of her energy to acting and earned a Golden Globe nomination in 1974 for portraying Billie Frechette in Dillinger. She nevertheless issued a handful of singles, among them the John Phillips-produced "No Love Today" featured in the 1976 film Mother, Jugs & Speed. In 1977 she issued her sole solo album, Victim of Romance, produced by Jack Nitzsche. Although reviewers generally regarded it as a solid debut, the record failed to chart strongly, prompting her return to acting.

Phillips launched a sustained television career in 1987 by securing the role of Anne Matheson on the prime-time series Knots Landing. During a March 1987 episode she performed the Mamas & the Papas standard "Dedicated to the One I Love." She continued appearing regularly through the 1990s and 2000s on programs such as Beverly Hills 90210, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and 7th Heaven.
