Biography
Michie Mee has taken the stage both as a genuine hip-hop performer and as a character within television scripts. The Canadian rapper cut several singles and served as an opener for established names including Judy Mowatt, Salt 'N Pepa, Queen Latifah, and Dream Warriors. She also secured screen roles in the films The Jimi Hendrix Story and In Too Deep plus episodes of Drop the Beat, La Femme Nikita, and Traders.
A native of Canada, Michie Mee launched her professional career at the age of fourteen. Early promise quickly produced bigger engagements, and eventually a recording deal that carried her audience across the border into the United States. That deal yielded her debut album, Jamaican Funk: Canadian Style, which reached stores in 1991 and featured the tracks “Get It Together,” “All Night Stand,” “You're Feisty,” “Kotch,” and “If Only They Knew.”
Throughout the 1990s she continued to tour and support other artists, yet she increasingly concentrated on building an acting résumé. After numerous guest appearances she read for a part in the forthcoming series Drop the Beat during late summer 1998. The audition secured her a co-starring position as the hip-hop queen Divine. While filming the show and following an extended recording hiatus, she began work on her second album, The First Cut Is the Deepest, whose songs blend reggae and hip-hop elements.
