Biography
Los Angeles-based singer and producer Michl drew a substantial following through his atmospheric electronic pop textures and distinctive tremulous vocals, which first reached listeners via a self-released EP in 2016 and subsequent tracks such as the 2018 single “Better with You,” crafted in tandem with Mura Masa. Over subsequent releases his approach grew increasingly personal, shifting between acoustic singer-songwriter textures and daring, unconventional pop experiments, a progression that culminated in his first full-length project, the 2023 album Form Follows Function.
Michl consistently withheld biographical details, allowing his intimate, nocturnal compositions to stand alone. His initial outing arrived in the first months of 2016 with the brooding track “Kill Our Way to Heaven,” soon followed by a self-titled EP that accumulated millions of streams before the year ended. The dreamy 2017 cuts “Everything’ll Change” and “Waste?” sustained that after-hours mood, while “Better with You” introduced a lighter rhythmic feel under the guidance of the U.K. producer Mura Masa. After “Pulse” surfaced later in 2018, Michl remained largely absent from view until 2021, when fresh material began to surface, including “Holidays” and the 2022 offerings “Digital Paralax” and “Promise.” Those recordings formed the core of Form Follows Function, his debut album.
