Mighty Mo Rodgers entered the world in Indiana as Maurice Rodgers, the son of a club owner whose establishment regularly hosted blues acts. While pursuing classical piano studies, he frequently immersed himself in the performances unfolding at his father’s venue. The mid-’60s soul sounds emanating from Memphis’s Stax label left a lasting mark on him during those formative years. Drawing from that Stax aesthetic, he assembled his initial group, the Rocketeers, during high school. Later, as a student at Indiana State College, he led the Maurice Rodgers Combo, delivering originals alongside era standards on Wurlitzer piano. Ultimately he abandoned his studies, relocated to Los Angeles, and committed fully to music. There he collaborated on stage and in the studio with numerous blues and R&B luminaries, contributing organ to Brenton Wood’s 1967 hit single “Gimme Little Sign.” Beyond performance, Rodgers took on production duties in 1973, helming the A&M Records album Sonny and Terry for Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. Wearying of routine session obligations, he turned to songwriting and joined the staffs of Motown and Chappel Publishing. He also maintained production work for fellow artists while returning to academia, ultimately earning a philosophy degree. His debut solo album, Blues Is My Wailin’ Wall, appeared on Blue Thumb in 1999 and consisted entirely of original compositions that fused his philosophical outlook with longstanding blues and soul foundations.
