Miguel Romero, a pianist and composer born in Cuba, moved to New York City at age ten. There he trained at the Jazz Mobile in Harlem under Max Roach, Freddie Waits, and Sonny Redd. Beyond his own performances at the keyboard, Romero has composed and produced material for dance artist Jocelyn Brown and supplied the hit dance single “Wake It Up” to Michelle Weeks. Now living in Atlanta, he directs a five-piece ensemble that appears regularly in local venues, at the Atlanta Jazz Festival, and in the 2000 Gainesville Georgia Jazz Series; he has also led clinics at Georgia State and Clark Atlanta University. His catalog so far includes the solo albums Island Breeze and Cuban Jazz Funk along with many guest appearances on other artists’ recordings, recognition that prompted Fred Scott of Contemporaryjazz.com and Plan 9 Stores to name him one of the Top 15 Independent and Budding Artists of 1999.
