Mika Miko takes its name from the Japanese term for “storytelling,” and the Los Angeles group’s sound—simultaneously thrashy and danceable—draws from Black Flag, the Necros, Reagan Youth, and Bad Brains. The lineup comprises Jessica Clavin, Jennifer Clavin, Jenna Thornhill, Michelle Suarez, and Kate Hall. Every member except Hall previously belonged to Dead Banana Ladies, while various players also appeared in other local outfits including the Ride, Silver Daggers, and Slitwrists. Jessica Clavin and Hall had both performed earlier in Wake Up SF; when drummer Jon Erik departed, Hall stepped in to fill the role. Early gigs paired the band with acts such as Wives, fronted by Dean Spunt, who also staffed the all-ages venue the Smell and operated the PPM label. PPM issued Mika Miko’s self-titled debut 7", whose raw yet affable aggression defined the group’s approach. Kill Rock Stars later signed the band, and the label joined PPM and Australia’s Deleted Art in releasing the 2006 full-length C.Y.S.L.A.B.F. The musicians spent the remainder of that year on the road, after which PPM paired them with Shoplifting for a split single. In 2007 Mika Miko issued the 666 EP—six tracks captured on 6/06/2006—and played the CMJ Music Marathon; the following year PPM reissued 666, appending material from the band’s prior singles and EPs.
