British trio Mildred Maude delivers an unyielding surge of guitar-led improvisation that folds in strands of post-rock and shoegaze. The unit first appeared onstage in 2016 and released its second album, Sleepover, toward the close of 2021.

Matt Ashdown on guitar, Lee Wade on bass, and Louie Newlands on drums established the group in Falmouth, Cornwall during 2014. The three musicians convened simply to perform together following individual periods of disruption: Ashdown had relocated to Cornwall, Newlands had left his small Cornish village for Falmouth, and Wade had overcome cancer. Over the ensuing two years they shaped a series of improvised compositions that later anchored their stage performances, which began locally in 2016. After their opening concert the trio opened for Lorelle Meets the Obsolete, and by their third appearance they had also supported the Fall. Their improvised performances, which navigated the space between control and abandon, quickly drew notice and cultivated a dedicated audience.

Early in 2017 the musicians entered Sawmills Studios in Cornwall to capture three pieces that became the 2018 debut album CPA I-III. That same year they served as the backing unit for Can's Damo Suzuki during a Falmouth concert. Shoegaze specialists Sonic Cathedral, impressed by the live work, offered the band a deal for its follow-up record. The musicians returned to Sawmills Studios, where they incorporated touches from Yo La Tengo, Stereolab, and Sun Ra; the resulting album, Sleepover, appeared at the end of 2021.
