Biography
Emerging from impoverished origins, the sertanejo duo Milionário e José Rico earned acclaim as one of Brazilian country music’s most pivotal acts, attaining widespread fame through sales exceeding eight platinum albums. Their signature sound rested on seamless vocal timbres combined with an eclectic approach that blended bolero, guarânia, chamamé, and Brazilian folk traditions while drawing instrumentation and arrangements from Mexico, Paraguay, and Brazil, thereby clearing space for subsequent pop-sertanejo pairings. The pair first crossed paths in São Paulo during the late 1960s. Three LPs they cut for Califórnia attracted no attention. A demo submitted to Chantecler’s director Brás Baccarin led to a contract, and their opening release under the new affiliation appeared in 1973. Commercial breakthrough remained elusive until two years afterward, when the mega-hit “Estrada Da Vida” moved two million copies, outpacing every prior sertanejo release. Five years later that same song supplied the title for a biographical film directed by the noted Nelson Pereira dos Santos. The duo also became the first sertanejo act to perform in China, doing so in 1986 after Zhao Ziyang, then the country’s premier minister, extended an invitation during his official 1985 visit to Brazil.
