Victory in a singing contest at the Apollo Theater secured Milira a recording agreement with the Motown-distributed Apollo label. Though still in her twenties, the young vocalist drew inspiration from jazz figures such as Sarah Vaughn, a connection borne out by her rich tone and command of scatting.
