The married pair Jeff Clarke and Emily Frances Bitze, performing under the name Milk Lines, deliver a lean and unsteady style of garage folk that draws equally from psychedelic rock and country traditions. Montreal serves as home base for the duo, who launched their live performances in 2012. Recognition from acts like Fucked Up led to their contribution of a "Sappy" cover for an online Nirvana tribute compilation, alongside the release of a split 7" alongside Omhouse toward the end of 2013. Subsequent performances alongside Hooded Fang, Shannon & the Clams, and Amen Dunes paved the way for a 2015 signing with In the Red—the label that had earlier put out a pair of albums from Clarke's previous project, Demon's Claws. A self-titled cassette emerged next, and after completing an autumn tour across North America in support of the King Khan & BBQ Show, the band's debut full-length Ceramic came out via In the Red.
