The Atlanta-based hip-hop trio Minamina Goodsong approaches its work with an outsized sense of playfulness that sets the crew apart from most peers. Still, Pgnut Prehistoric (Brandon Odum), Adahma AD (Evan Wix), and DJ T'Challa, aka the Teacher (Cedric Dodd) treat their craft with genuine commitment. Friends since middle school, the three first absorbed the art form through landmark late-'80s and early-'90s recordings by De La Soul, the Beastie Boys, and New York's Native Tongues collective. Prior to forming the group, Pgnut lent his talents to Kaleidoscope, an effort that spotlighted underground Atlanta figure My Cousin Troy. AD had already established a local profile through guest spots on pH Balance crew member Captain Mudfish Starbolt's "Most Don't Know" and on Psyche Origami's Perforated EP.

The group surfaced in 2001 via its debut vehicle, Time for Breakfast (Royal Fuzz), showcasing rhymes dense with pop-culture references and laced with broad, towel-slapping comedy centered on girls, sex, television, and bodily functions. Even so, Pgnut and AD demonstrated real skill through their interlocking delivery, while T'Challa supplied beats that balanced eccentricity with solid low-end drive. The record drew on contributions from several Kaleidoscope affiliates as well as members of the city's Plainzwalkers circle.

Minamina Goodsong returned in 2003 with the follow-up Snatch Grab I Love You. That release built upon concepts introduced on the first album without sacrificing the group's trademark humor or the unpredictable rhymes and samples that had become its signature. Between 2002 and 2003 the trio shared bills with Dres tha Beatnik, Black Eyed Peas, Blackalicious, I Am the World Trade Center, and Antipop Consortium.
