Biography
Since its launch in 1991 as an ambitious outgrowth of Mingus Dynasty, the Mingus Big Band—frequently assembling more than twenty players—has delved into the legendary bassist’s catalog on a weekly basis. Regular appearances at New York’s Time Café were complemented by a notable sequence of Dreyfus releases that showcase the ensemble’s interpretive depth. With bold energy, technical mastery, and vivid tonal variety, the large-scale group brings to life some of Mingus’s most intricate compositions. Among the many contributors to this vital undertaking are Randy Brecker, Ryan Kisor, Lew Soloff, Jack Walrath, Philip Harper, Art Baron, Frank Lacy, Ronnie Cuber, Alex Foster, Craig Handy, Chris Potter, Steve Slagle, John Stubblefield, James Carter, Kenny Drew, Jr., Michael Formanek, and Marvin "Smitty" Smith.
