Shaun Kilfoyle’s project Minks first emerged with a brooding approach to indie pop that evoked the Cure, New Order, and My Bloody Valentine. Until the April 2010 appearance of the group’s debut single Funeral Song on Captured Tracks—the same imprint that issued Wild Nothing’s early work—few details surfaced about the band. Later that summer Minks issued Ophelia, a track that exposed a gentler dimension of their sound. Expanded to a six-piece for the stage, the group shared bills with Veronica Falls as well as labelmates Cosmetics and Blank Dogs, steadily building anticipation that peaked with the January 2011 arrival of the debut album By the Hedge. After vocalist Amalie Bruun departed to form Ex Cops, Kilfoyle steered the project toward a smoother, more buoyant palette. While residing on Long Island’s East End he drew inspiration from a dilapidated waterfront property called Tides End, which supplied the title for the 2013 album he tracked alongside producer and engineer Mark Verbos.
