Biography
Under the Minor Science alias, Angus Finlayson crafts inventive left-field club tracks alongside more exploratory material intended for home listening. His first releases surfaced throughout the 2010s as a run of acclaimed singles that favored depth and space, built from intricate beats, abrupt vocal interjections, and sudden heavy bass drops, notably on the 2017 track "Volumes." The ecstatic yet reflective debut album Second Language arrived in 2020. He has also earned recognition as a DJ whose sets move freely between club bangers and ambient abstractions. The experimental project Absent Friends grew from collage-style sets into live performances of original material, leading to the studio full-length Absent Friends, Vol. 3 in 2023.
Although based in Berlin, Angus Finlayson originally comes from England, where he worked as a music journalist before starting to produce and DJ as Minor Science during the 2010s. The Trilogy Tapes issued his hazy experimental house EP Noble Gas in 2014. He soon became one of the first artists signed to Nic Tasker's London-based Whities label, later renamed AD 93, which put out one single each year from 2015 to 2017 along with the experimental mixtape Absent Friends, Vol. 2, made for a London-based installation. Remixes for Chevel, Cosmin TRG, and Special Request also appeared during this period.
Minor Science's debut full-length Second Language surfaced in 2020 and included some of his most intense rhythmic explorations. Two contrasting recordings followed in 2023, both displaying clock images on their covers: the AD 93 single 064, a giddy mashup of hardcore, bassline, and electro, and the Balmat-issued full-length Absent Friends, Vol. 3, a fluid, textural set of experimental pieces created for his live performances.
