Biography
Hailing from Detroit, the duo Mission to the Sun crafts eerie elegies against a bleak futuristic setting built from post-industrial and experimental ambient layers. Their 2021 album Cleansed by Fire conjured the mood of Joy Division’s Ian Curtis working alongside Coil, while the 2023 follow-up Sophia Oscillations moved toward a stronger guitar foundation.
Christopher Samuels, formerly of the post-punk band Ritual Howls, supplies synthesizers and sample programming for Mission to the Sun; Kirill Slavin, known from the industrial/electro outfits DeLIEN and Fluxion A/D, supplies the poetic words and somber vocals. Released by Felte, the debut Cleansed by Fire came out in 2021, followed later that year by the non-album single “No Language.” The second full-length Sophia Oscillations appeared in 2023, introducing guitar parts, noise textures, and tighter rhythmic frameworks to the duo’s post-industrial sound.
