Biography
Missy Raines has long stood out for her command of the upright bass within bluegrass and Americana circles. Through stints alongside Claire Lynch and Jim Hurst, plus her leadership of the New Hip, she cemented her status as a steady, adaptable presence, a profile underscored by the 2024 solo release Highlander.
Raines entered the world in Short Gap, West Virginia, where her parents first acquired an acoustic bass for their own use before noticing their daughter’s affinity for the instrument, an interest that already extended to piano and guitar. Lacking any structured training, she quickly assembled credits in studios and on the road, beginning with the progressive bluegrass quartet Cloud Valley and its lone studio effort, the 1983 album A Bluegrass Ensemble, then continuing alongside guitarist and banjoist Eddie Adcock, formerly of the Country Gentlemen, on the 1987 project Eddie Adcock & Talk of the Town.
Her visibility rose further during her tenure in Claire Lynch’s band through the late 1990s and early 2000s. One year after appearing on Lynch’s 1997 Grammy-nominated Silver and Gold, Raines claimed the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Bass Player of the Year honor, becoming the first woman to receive it; she ultimately collected the award ten times between 1998 and 2021, a record unmatched in the organization’s history. Also in 1998 she issued her debut bandleader album, My Place in the Sun, and the first of two well-regarded duet sets with Jim Hurst, titled Two.
After contributing to recordings by vocalists such as Mac Wiseman, banjoists including Allison Brown, and outfits like the Toy Hearts, Raines launched the New Hip, a venture shaped by jazz and wider Americana influences. The group produced two albums: Inside Out in 2009 and New Frontier in 2013. In 2011 she began teaching bluegrass bass through the ArtistWorks online platform, and in 2015 she joined the supergroup Helen Highwater—featuring Mike Compton, David Grier, and Shad Cobb—for a self-titled EP. Raines next issued Royal Traveler under her own name in 2018, assembled the touring group Allegheny in 2020, and, with that ensemble, delivered Highlander in 2024 while mounting a North American tour.
