Biography
Mista Madd occupies a central role in Houston's urban and rap circles. His primary recognition comes from hosting one of the city's leading morning programs on KBXX 97.9 The Box under the radio name "Madd Hatta." In his entrepreneurial capacity, he aided the breakthrough of then-underground rappers Paul Wall and Chamillionaire via his own Paid in Full Entertainment imprint.
Before taking the morning slot, Madd co-ran the Straight from the Streetz radio program from the mid- to late 1990s with Southern rap producer Simon "Crazy C" Cullins, Jr., whose résumé lists Scarface, Do or Die, and Eightball & MJG; the show also reached viewers on local television and served as a key platform that broke numerous local acts within Houston hip-hop. He further exploited the Straight from the Streetz name by issuing a run of Houston Hard Hitters compilations on Paid in Full.
The Mista Madd persona first appeared on the 1997 album PH Factor. His biggest local success followed with the 2000 LP Can I Live?, which carried the hit single "Down South" featuring Slim Thug and Yungstar. Paid in Full signed Paul Wall and Chamillionaire in 2002 while they still performed together as the Color Changin' Click; after emerging as underground sensations, the pair dissolved and advanced to major labels in 2004.
Speculation about Paid in Full's finances soon circulated in Houston, prompting Madd to title his 2007 album Still Standing in direct reply. The record prominently showcased the production outfit Beatco, headed by Crazy C, alongside Shei Atkins, the flagship vocalist on Madd's roster.
