Biography
Mitch McVicker, a CCM singer and songwriter, pursued studies in music education at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. During that time he formed a close bond with classmate Rich Mullins, who had already established himself as a respected figure in Christian music circles. After graduation Mullins settled in New Mexico and urged McVicker to accompany him; the two then co-wrote the musical The Canticle of the Plains, in which McVicker performed the lead role and later made his first recorded appearance on the soundtrack album. Work on his own debut album began in 1997, with Mullins serving as co-producer. Soon after the sessions ended, the pair were booked to appear at a benefit concert in Wichita but never reached the venue; on September 19 Mullins died in an automobile accident en route, leaving McVicker in a coma. McVicker regained consciousness and resumed both Mullins’ ministry Compassion International and his own developing solo career, finally releasing the self-titled debut album in 1998. Chasing the Horizon arrived three years afterward.
