Biography
Melissa Guion, recording as MJ Guider from her New Orleans base, builds expansive, introspective dream pop pieces with the aid of clicking drum machines, bass guitar, and dense layers of echo plus additional processing. Her serene, ethereal works draw from both the city’s atmosphere and science-fiction themes. She introduced her first album-length effort via the techno-tinged, atmospheric pop of Precious Systems in 2016 before shifting toward a darker, more somber mood shaped by darkwave on the 2020 release Sour Cherry Bell.
MJ Guider’s earliest outing arrived as the limited-edition cassette Green Plastic, put out by Constellation Tatsu in early 2014. Two years afterward the full-length Precious Systems surfaced on Kranky, at which point Guion enlarged the project to a three-piece lineup for concerts. Following a 2018 tour alongside the doom metal group Thou and an appearance at the Roadburn Festival in 2019, Guion issued her next album, Sour Cherry Bell, in 2020. Recorded across her residence and practice room, it incorporated elements of shoegaze, industrial, and gothic pop.
