Biography
British singer Mo Jamil claimed victory on the 2017 edition of The Voice and secured a recording contract with Polydor. Born Mo Jamil Adeniran on September 25, 1995, in London, he entered the world as the son of a Gambian immigrant mother compelled to relinquish him for adoption shortly after his birth. Raised in Warrington, England, by Nigerian adoptive parents, he endured years of physical abuse until authorities removed him and placed him back into the foster-care system. Music became his refuge, and he still achieved strong academic results, later enrolling at a music college in Manchester. While employed on the night shift as a hotel bellboy, he caught the attention of a talent scout who urged him to try out for The Voice. Under the guidance of Jennifer Hudson, he impressed both the panel and viewers, advancing rapidly through each stage to claim the title. After the win, he reestablished contact with his biological mother. Polydor then issued his first single, "That Feeling," in March 2018; the uplifting electro-pop-R&B track highlighted his rich, soulful voice in a style that recalled old-school shouters such as Otis Redding. His debut album, Evolve, arrived the next month; he wrote or co-wrote every song on the project, which peaked at number 36 on the U.K. chart.
