Biography
Emerging from Melbourne, Australia, the three-piece punk group Mod Con took shape after frontwoman Erica Dunn concluded her earlier project, Palm Springs. Keeping the same members—Dunn on vocals and lead guitar, Sara Retallick on bass, and Raquel Solier on drums—the band moved away from the Americana leanings of that previous effort and instead channeled the foundational punk approach of the Slits and Patti Smith along with current acts such as Savages and fellow Australians Tropical Fuck Storm. Their opening release, a split single alongside Adelaide-based Fair Maiden, came out on the Melbourne label Poison City in 2017. After becoming a consistent presence on Australian stages and steadily expanding their audience, the trio relocated to rural Victoria to track their first album. Working inside the isolated house and studio owned by Tropical Fuck Storm’s Gareth Liddiard, the members committed the songs that formed the debut. Modern Convenience appeared at the start of 2018, again through Poison City.
