Following the dissolution of Stumpy Joe, several of its alumni regrouped in 1993 to launch a punk-tinged power-pop act first billed as the Glory Stompers. An identically named band forced an immediate rechristening as the Model Rockets. John Ramberg handled guitar and lead vocals in the original quartet, which also featured guitarist Grant Johnson, bassist Boyd Remillard, and drummer Graham Black. A locally released Seattle single and one compilation track preceded the group’s debut album, Hilux, issued on Lucky Records and produced by ex-Young Fresh Fellow Scott McCaughey. Grant Johnson exited in late 1994; former Chemistry Set member Scott Sutherland took his place. The band next moved to the C/Z label and promoted its 1996 sophomore release, Snatch It Back and Hold It, through a successful tour of Spain.
