Biography
Moderate Rebels project an alluring brand of pop that pairs with an adventurous stance, operating as an inventive ensemble whose output captivates listeners while upending standard expectations around group operations. Their roster fluctuates between two and ten participants, anchored by several steady contributors yet deliberately open to spontaneous shifts in personnel. Sonically they blend serialist dance rhythms with synth pop, indie rock, psychedelia, and echoes of earlier rock and pop styles, as the words deliver a sharp, skeptical gaze toward everyday political currents. Those concepts were already locked in on the 2017 debut The Sound of Security, whereas 2021’s If You See Something That Doesn’t Look Right displayed more intricate compositional ideas and refined studio craft.
Established in London during 2016, the ensemble drew its title from a phrase that surfaced constantly in reports on Syrian turmoil, interpreting the expression as an odd blend of surface neutrality and quiet critique. Calling themselves an “anti-music collective,” they conceived the venture from the outset as one with elastic personnel numbers that could expand or contract according to the demands of live shows and studio work. Recurring central figures encompass Emma Faulkner and Kate Worthington handling vocals, Mo Bruce on keyboards and vocals, Kevin Retoryka on guitar and vocals, Anna Jones on bass, and Susan Milanovich on drums. Their inaugural 2016 appearance featured only the track “God Sent Us,” extended to thirty minutes, though a tightened four-minute edit served as the first single issued that November. The five-song EP Proxy followed in June 2017, and the opening full-length The Sound of Security landed six months afterward. Shared Values, the next album, appeared less than twelve months later. Output then tapered for a spell, yet the April 2021 arrival of If You See Something That Doesn’t Look Right disclosed it as the opening chapter of a planned trilogy, the remaining two volumes slated for release before year’s end.
