In 2004 two junior high students from New York City, Sandra Nazz and Alex Niemetz, launched Modrocket after discovering a shared urge to play music. Nazz experimented on a toy drum set while Niemetz worked with a Stratocaster guitar copy, and their early sessions prompted the pair to form a full band. They soon enlisted classmates Alice Blythe on vocals and Alanna Higgins on bass, after which the quartet began writing original material shaped by indie and garage rock forebears that included the Stooges, the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. By 2007 the group had committed four of those songs to tape and assembled them into a self-released EP that carried the band’s name. The recording circulated online and drew attention to the members’ unusually young ambitions, yet it failed to move beyond the curiosity attached to their age or secure them a formal record deal.
