Born on 5 February 1946 in Moseaso, Ghana, Ben first drew attention beyond West Africa through his well-received 1983 solo album African Feeling and as the inaugural artist on the British-based African music specialist label Stern’s. Already respected in his home country as a drummer, vocalist, producer and arranger, he had performed with Messengers Dance Band, T.O. Jazz, the Fabulous Stars and K.K. Masters before establishing his own label, Ohianawa, in 1970. His earliest production work appeared with T.O. Jazz. After participating in the 10th Organization Of African Unity Conference in Addis Ababa in 1973, he renamed the label African Feeling Organization. By the late 1970s his productions and compositions had earned him widespread recognition across West Africa through his association with the African Brothers on the major successes ‘Agatha’ and ‘Owua Aye Me Bi’, and with the City Boys Band on their 1981 hit album Ankwanobi. In 1982 he produced the innovative Afro/reggae/funk album Twanky Blacks for the Ghanaian band the Twanky Blacks.
