Biography
Mohand Azar's infectious dance music blends Algeria's traditional Berber roots with contemporary strains of funk, rap, and rock. Born in the Algerian city of Kabyle, he relocated with his parents to northern France at the age of three months and grew up there. A visit to relatives in Kabyle prompted him to "rediscovered" his musical heritage, after which he immersed himself in the fundamental rudiments of Berber music. Jam sessions alongside funk musicians and traditional Berber dancers helped shape his distinctive sound. He launched his first band in 1990 and soon became a regular presence at music festivals throughout France. The ensemble draws on musicians from both France and Belgium.
