Biography
The lo-fi psychedelic duo Mondo Lava, comprising James Ketchum and Leon Roc Hu, operates from Davis, California. Using guitar, Casio, and hand drums, they commit their playfully trippy material straight to cassette, drawing from Tropicalia, dub, and video game soundtracks to produce an exotic yet whimsical atmosphere. All of their output has appeared exclusively on cassette, among them Parrot Head Cartridge in 2014 and Ogre Heights in 2018.
Active since the late 2000s, the pair self-released Alien Time Rips that year with additional guitarist Gareth Ewing on board. They played live shows, posted tracks online from time to time, and then joined Eternal Tapestry for a split cassette issued in 2012 by college radio station KDVS. Chicago-based Hausu Mountain released Parrot Head Cartridge in 2014, after which the duo returned to the imprint for Ogre Heights in 2018.
