Formed in Sweden as an alternative rock outfit, Monostar initially featured singer and guitarist Eric Palmqwist, lead guitarist Linus Larson, and drummer Jimmy Harlevi. These three musicians first connected as teenagers and began performing together in a style shaped by heavy metal. Bassist Carl Dahlström joined later to complete the lineup, after which the group cut two demos that drew strong praise from the Swedish music press. The recordings sparked a heated bidding war among labels, leading Monostar to sign with Soap Records in 1997. Several months afterward came the EP The Ways to Bring You Down, and the band followed with the full-length album The Airport in 1998.
