Formed by musicians originating in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Norway, and Sweden, Monoswezi blends African rhythms with jazz fusion, pop, and strands of both African and Scandinavian folk traditions. The ensemble debuted in 2013 and has since issued four albums, among them the sonically adventurous Shanu from 2021.

Norwegian saxophonist and clarinetist Hallvard Godal first connected with percussionist and vocalist Calu Tsemane through a 2008 cultural exchange. That encounter sparked an Afro-Nordic project that soon incorporated Zimbabwean artist Hope Masike on vocals, mbira, and percussion, Norwegian bassist Putte Johander, and Swedish drummer Erik Nylander. The quartet adopted the name Monoswezi by combining the initial letters of their home countries and delivered their first release, The Village, in 2013. Early recordings showcased their cross-continental approach, pairing mbira and marimba with saxophone and jazz drumming alongside the voices of Masike and Tsemane. The resulting stylistic fusion quickly attracted listeners worldwide, prompting regular international touring alongside the 2015 album Monoswezi Yanga and the 2017 follow-up A Je, both issued by Riverboat Records. Entering the new decade, the group expanded its palette with harmonium and synthesizers on the eclectic Shanu.
