Biography
In 1993 the modern rock trio Monotone Pictures formed at Central Washington University. Guitarist Lars Emerick connected with drummer Steve Damm three weeks into their freshman year once Damm answered an ad Emerick had posted in a bathroom reader seeking another avid musician. The pair tested out monikers including Current and Ground Flower, performed at assorted fraternity events, and went on to support indie popsters the Posies and Super Deluxe. Five years afterward, as graduation approached, Emerick and Damm readied themselves for conventional employment and set music aside, if only briefly.
Although music would not cover living costs, the two felt no alarm. Not long after they met eighteen-year-old Kristin Pleasant, locking the final configuration of Monotone Pictures into place. The newly complete trio began drawing modest crowds on the Seattle club scene and soon landed a contract with Seafair-Bolo Records. Their debut album, Framed, appeared in September 2000.
