Biography
Moody Beaches surfaced in Melbourne's underground circuit during 2017 with a sound that blended post-punk edges and grunge textures, first making their mark through a series of live appearances. The band came together when Anna Lienhop on vocals and guitar joined Jessie Dennis on bass and Julia Watt on drums, each of whom had previously performed in other local outfits such as Hot Wings and La Bastard. Drawing from the early-1990s alternative rock template, they cited the Breeders, Bikini Kill, and L7 among their primary touchstones. Steady appearances on Melbourne's active club circuit soon led to a deal with Poison City Records. Working alongside producer Matt Chow of Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Bench Press, the group issued their first album, Weird Friends, on that imprint in August 2018 and immediately launched a national tour to promote it.
