Moon Attendant arrived in 2020 with the album One Last Summer, delivering a blend of reverb-saturated guitar pop that reaches into psychedelia, shoegaze, and the classic mid-'80s indie sound associated with Creation Records. The group drew its membership from Black Hearted Brother, Slowdive, and Holton's Opulent Oog, emerging from a loose circle of players centered on Neil Halstead and the Big Potato label he runs. Halstead and drummer Ian McCutcheon had first collaborated in Slowdive during the 1990s before continuing in Mojave 3, while Halstead later joined guitarist and keyboardist Nick Holton along with bassist Paul Blewett to form the shoegaze outfit Black Hearted Brother. Holton's own project Holton's Opulent Oog issued records through Big Potato, after which Halstead and McCutcheon created HOO; Blewett then linked with that same pair to round out President Sweetheart. Across these various efforts the musicians explored gentle psychedelia, vintage synth textures, and poppy shoegaze. Taking the lead on Moon Attendant, Blewett fused those elements with jangly '80s indie pop and a preference for subtly off-kilter arrangements, handling guitar, vocals, multiple keyboards, and all songwriting. Holton supplied synths and production, Halstead contributed guitars, McCutcheon played drums, and newcomer Danny Molynuex added guitar and backing vocals. The resulting debut, One Last Summer, appeared in August 2020 via Big Potato in the U.K. and Graveface in the U.S.
