Biography
Moon Pool & Dead Band pairs Nate Young of Wolf Eyes with Dave Shettler, whose résumé includes the Sights and Koufax, both longtime participants in Detroit’s indie rock and experimental communities. The pair’s raw analog synth experiments draw clear inspiration from the city’s foundational techno figures yet remain markedly funky and suited to the dance floor. They assembled the project in early 2010 and began issuing limited cassettes and CD-Rs on Wolf Eyes’ AA Records. Their first vinyl outing arrived in 2011 via the 7-inch “Patsy” on Cass Records and a self-titled LP on Agitated Records. Not Not Fun issued the Human Fly EP in 2012, its title track built around a sample of the Cramps. Three years afterward the double 12-inch MEQ became the inaugural release on Midwich Productions, the Chicago electronic label started by Magas, another Michigan noise veteran. The label followed with Humanizer, Moon Pool’s second full-length, in 2016.
