Moondogg came together in the mid-90s when guitarist Derwood, formerly of Generation X, joined forces with vocalist Liz Westwood once their prior outfit Westworld had disintegrated. After Savage Records collapsed, Westworld found itself stranded and broke in Arizona; while the remaining members headed back to Britain in 1991, the core pair instead lingered in the quiet town of Carefree. Derwood spent the interval mastering slide guitar, and together they shot a modest arthouse film. Only in 1994 did the duo resettle in the UK, where they quickly absorbed the emerging club sounds of London. Those influences steered them toward a fresh project steeped in jungle and trip-hop, with production handled by Martin Lee Stephenson, who releases under the alias Law And Order on imprints such as Suburban Base and has worked with multiple drum ‘n’ bass artists including Kenny Ken. The resulting demos reached Tim Abbot, the marketing consultant for Oasis and manager of Robbie Williams (ex-Take That). Having just launched his own Better Records imprint, Abbot viewed Moondogg as the ideal act to inaugurate the label. Their debut single “Wonderfool,” built around slide guitar, dub and jungle elements, created an immediate impact and was succeeded by the April 1996 release of the band’s first album, Fat Lot Of Good.
