Morella's Forest emerged from Dayton, Ohio, driven by a shared attachment to 1980s new wave and indie-pop that defined the group's sonic identity. Sydney Rentz fronted the quartet on vocals and guitar, supported by Sean McCorkle on bass, Shawn Johnson on guitar and keyboards, and Nate McCorkle behind the drums. Before committing to Tooth and Nail Records in 1996, the band carried those reference points, along with noisy guitar sequences and melodic keyboards, across numerous Mid-West stages. The EPs "Super Deluxe" and "Hang Out" appeared that same year, followed in 1997 by the full-length debut "Ultraphonic Hiss." Former Brainiac keyboardist John Schmersal later joined the lineup, resulting in the 1998 release of the second album "From Dayton With Love."
