Biography
Moritz von Oswald Trio brought together Vladislav Delay on percussion, Max Loderbauer handling sequencer and synthesizer duties, and von Oswald on programming, keyboards, and percussion. By the time the three musicians converged, each already commanded a longstanding presence at the forefront of electronic music. Von Oswald had helped originate dub techno through his work with the Basic Channel and Chain Reaction labels. Born Sasu Ripatti, Delay had issued material on Chain Reaction and crafted especially tactile and introspective house under the Luomo alias. Loderbauer had formed one half of Sun Electric and continued collaborating with Tobias Freund in NSI. The group’s studio albums, Vertical Ascent from 2009 and Horizontal Structures from 2011, diverged sharply from their earlier catalogs. Both records grew out of improvised sessions refined into extended, meandering, understated pieces grounded in ambient techno yet drawing on Latin, African, and Jamaican traditions. The musicians also performed live, and a concert captured at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City during the 2010 Unsound Festival appeared later that year under the title Live in New York. Fetch arrived in 2012 as a darker four-track collection that incorporated further contributions from Freund and bassist Marc Muellbauer.
